Mediastinum
The so-called 'mediastinum' is the space between the lungs, which is mainly filled by the heart, but also organs such as the thymus and the trachea and esophagus.
Cysts or tumors (so-called thymomas) can occur particularly in the area of the thymus gland, which can preferably be removed surgically in a minimally invasive manner.
A disease that also affects the thymus and occurs predominantly in younger women is the so-called myasthenia gravis (severe muscle weakness – caused by auto-antibodies against the conduction transmission from nerves to the muscles), in which surgical removal of the thymus / thymus gland can lead to the progression positively influenced.
