Before performing surgery of the lungs, an inspection of the pulmonary reserve function through a detailed peneumological examination ist very important. Furthermore, possible metastases in other organs (e.g. bones or brain) need to be ruled out.

Surgery of the lungs

Usually, when metastases in the lungs are found, only small surrounding parts of tissue have to be removed. However, if there are multiple metastases in one pulmonary lobe, a complete removal is sometimes necessary.
Following surgery, drainage tubes have to be installed on the affected side to drain the thoracic cavity and channel away wound secretions and possibly exiting air from the freshly operated lungs. The duration of hospitalisation after such a procedure averages around 3 to 4 days.
