Anal cancer

Anal carcinoma is a rare tumor disease of the anus. Symptoms such as bleeding and pain in the anus are the first signs of this malignant condition. The carcinoma is often associated with viral involvement of the anus region. This virus, papillomavirus (HPV), can be transmitted through sexual contact.
Most affected patients can be successfully treated with combined radiation and chemotherapy. Surgical therapy should usually only be considered if therapy fails. In all cases, an interdisciplinary case presentation and therapy recommendation should be aimed for (tumor board) in order to ensure optimal therapy.
