Dear patients and referring physicians!

A warm welcome to you!

Surgery means taking responsibility for a person and is therefore a matter of special trust as well as a question of experience. Thanks to my many years of work as a specialist in surgery and thoracic surgery with in-depth training at home and abroad and, most recently, several years as head physician at the University Clinic for Thoracic Surgery at the Inselspital Bern, I have a wealth of experience.

The particular focus of my medical work is on minimally invasive, including robot-assisted, treatments of lung diseases (particularly lung cancer) and other organs or tumors in and on the chest (with the exception of heart surgery). I have also played a key role in the development of several minimally invasive surgical techniques for the treatment of chest wall deformities (pectus excavatum, pectus carinatum), including the robot-assisted removal of the first/top rib in thoracic outlet syndrome.

My personal concern is to put this experience at the service of the health of my patients.

We warmly welcome patients of all insurance classes!

I would be happy to answer any questions you may have or to arrange a personal consultation with patients.

My main research interests can be summarized under the following keywords:

  • Minimally invasive thoracic surgery including robot-assisted surgery for the treatment of lung cancer

  • Robot-assisted surgery for the treatment of tumors of the mediastinum/mediastinum – so-called mediastinal tumors (e.g. thymoma, schwannoma, cysts, etc.) as well as myasthenia gravis (thymectomy)

  • Robot-assisted surgery to remove the top/first rib in thoracic outlet syndrome (when the vessels and nerves to the arms are compressed/pinched between the first rib and the clavicle)

  • Conservative treatment (suction cup or dynamic compression corset – especially for children up to 14 years old) as well as, if necessary, surgical minimally invasive treatment of chest wall deformities such as pectus excavatum or keel chest (usually from 15/16 years old up to adulthood)
  • Surgical treatment of rib fractures, especially serial rib fractures and their influence on the duration of hospitalization as well as the patient’s recovery and quality of life after treatment

  • Basic research in the area of malignant pleural mesothelioma and lung cancer
  • FMH
  • Medical Society of the Canton of Bern
  • SGT (Swiss Society of Thoracic Surgery)
  • SGC (Swiss Society of Surgery)/SCC (Swiss College of Surgeons)
  • EACTS (European Association for Cardio-Thoracic Surgery)
  • ESTS (European Society of Thoracic Surgeons)

The training of young talent is extremely important in order to sustainably strengthen our healthcare system and maintain it at a high level of quality.
As head of the training center for thoracic surgery at the private clinics Beau Site (Hirslanden) and Lindenhofspital (Lindenhofgruppe) in Bern, I attach great importance to training and further training the relevant specialists.

This also includes the regular organization of national and international courses in order to pass on the relevant know-how and exchange ideas among specialists.
