Breast cancer

Breast cancer is the most common form of cancer in women. In Switzerland, around 5`600 women and around 50 men get it.

Breast cancer occurs at the transition from the glandular lobules to the excretory ducts of the mammary gland.

After the diagnosis by means of radiological procedures and a tissue biopsy, the operation is performed first in the vast majority of cases. This includes the complete removal of the tumor and the removal of the so-called sentinel lymph node. Only in a few cases does all of the breast tissue need to be removed; In such a situation, we offer our patients the option of immediate reconstruction.

If the breast can be preserved, local radiation therapy is performed in addition to the surgery.

All breast cancer patients also receive drug therapy to minimize the risk of relapse. Depending on the type of tumor and its stage, anti-hormone, chemotherapy or immune therapies are used.

The prognosis of breast cancer has improved significantly in the last few decades through early detection on the one hand and improved therapies on the other. With this we can cure two thirds of all breast cancer patients today.
